Stock cages are of a standard box design, usually equipped with an 18? long x 12? high canary cage front, and being between 10 and 12 inches deep. Most breeders favour a double or treble breeding cage, which can be separated by slides, to provide single cages or a double/treble length breeding or flight cage
Cages are equipped with oval softwood perches so as not to injure the birds feet, standard seed hoppers and water pots, each clipped onto the outside of the bottom rail of the cage. Inside the cage, most fanciers use sawdust or wood shavings as an absorbant floor covering, changing this at regular weekly intervals.
Other essential equipments are baths, used regularly to help maintain the birds feathers in good condition, egg-food drawers which hook under the cage door to supply softfood or soaked seeds as required, and finger drawers which slide between the cage wires and are used for feeding condition seed or other treats.
Standard canary nest pans are necessary throughout the spring and summer months, as well as cuttle clips which can be used to supply cuttle fish bone, greenfood or hold nesting material in place. In addition, Yorkshire Canary show cages will be required, to be used for training purposes, running out the birds when their stock cages are being cleaned, as well as during exhibitions after the annual moult is over. Most fanciers keep a few old cages for training, with the better cages reserved for the show bench.
